rsz headache3Headaches are very common. It’s believed that nine out of 10 Americans suffer from headaches, but what if headaches become chronic or interferes with your daily life? While common, headaches are more complicated than you might think. For instance, there are over 150 types of headaches, but 95 percent of all headaches are considered a primary headache. Another condition doesn’t cause primary headaches and most of these headaches are associated with muscle tension in the neck.

The Most Common Types of Headaches

There are several types of headaches, but primary headaches are the most common. Those types of headaches include:

  • Tension Headaches: Tension headaches are the most common type of headache in the world. These headaches only cause mild to moderate pain, carry no other symptoms, and go away over time.
  • Migraine Headaches: We can describe migraines as an intense throbbing, pounding pain that can last up to three days. Sufferers often experience additional symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, dizziness, or fever. It is considered one of the leading causes of disability in the world.
  • Cluster Headaches: Cluster headaches are a severe type of headache, described as an intense piercing or burning pain behind or around one eye. The pain can be either throbbing or constant, and they often appear up to three times a day during a “cluster period.”
  • Chronic Headaches: Headaches are considered to be chronic if you have a headache for 15 days or more within a period that is longer than three months.
  • Posttraumatic Headaches: Posttraumatic headaches occur within two to three days following a head injury, such as in a motor vehicle accident. They may be associated with other symptoms, such as trouble concentrating, vertigo, and mood or memory changes.

Chiropractic Care is an Effective, Natural Headache Treatment

Chiropractic care is an effective headache treatment because most headaches are due to injury or muscle tension. Depending on your headache and symptoms, your treatment plan may include:

  • Chiropractic adjustment to relieve muscle tension and improve blood flow
  • Provide nutritional advice or recommend specific lifestyle changes
  • Provide insight into exercises and stretches that can help ease tension and headaches
